What are the tools and process to store intelligent?

Rating: +0

Positive Negative

Hi all,
for an article I write on storage I've seen that data are increasing drasticaly but the Storage vendors are only providing tolls with a limited productvity. It poses the problem to store the important datas and not everything as now. Have you in your enterprise a debate around the criticity and the priority around your data? What are the tools you use to classify the datas.
Do you store intelligent?
surveys, case studies and all kinds of documents on this theme are welcomed!

Bertrand,

You hit on a very hot topic of debate in the corporate space. What to keep and what not to keep, and how to do it, all based on the information vs. data and the information importance to an organization vs. the older current methods of storing data deeper within the infrastructure on lower cost media based on frequency of accessing the data, called ILM.

There are many varied auto-classification tools, which magically decide if a piece of information is relevant or simply the CEO helping his daughter with her homework.

There are no magic bullets in the industry to figure out what's relevant and what's not. The best approach than an organization can take today, is a "combination" of software tools, best practices and a "keep it simple" common sense approach to managing information vs. data. In my opinion, more can actually be accomplished to effect best practices through consistent end-user training and re-enforcement than any software tools.

Good Luck,
Peter
