What stands in the way of changing the status quo?

Rating: +1

Positive Negative

If an individual, company or country becomes aware of a “pain/danger” that they would like to eliminate or an opportunity they would you like to capture what stands in the way of taking action to change the status quo?

Phil,

This is a tough answer. I gave an analogy once to a CEO who needed to do what I think you are asking. They had been in a particular market segment for nearly two decades, it was very specialized, but it was also going away. The CEO knew this and needed to re-invent the company using the core technology that was already in place as its base and new launching pad.

His problem was that nearly every person in the company was firmly entrenched in the "old business" and everything about it. He has already started the process of bringing on new executives to re-focus the company and they were running into major problems in working with the existing factions who were resistant to change.

The analogy that I used was that the CEO needed to take his company in his hands, pick it up, then flip it up side down and begin to shake it (really hard) and in the shaking some people will hold on, others slip and fall out, etc. And after he's done shaking he could turn it back over and set it down and now [and only now] could he begin his journey to re-invent the company.

It's a rough answer, but if you are really beholden to share-holders, customers, your employees and growing your business as opposed to watching it melt away before your eyes ...

Good Luck,
Peter
